Rube Goldberg

Description

As a class, you will build a single Rube Goldberg Machine, using the GoGo boards with various sensors and actuators, the laser cutter, and the lab’s woodshop tools. The Rube Goldberg Machine you build will consist of 6 stations, each of which takes a particular sensor input and has to activate the following sensor in a wonderfully complicated way. The class will be split into 7 groups (group assignments), each group responsible for one station.

  • I/O You must have at least one step between the input sensor and the following sensor. A step consists of a GoGo board sensor detecting some change and then engaging an actuator (which then somehow triggers the next sensor…) Each step must involve moving parts–movement can be with linkages, gears, ropes being pulled, wheel systems, chain of marbles or balls rolling triggered by the actuator, etc.; there is no limit to what that entails.
  • Physical mechanisms You must use the laser cutter and at least one woodshop tool somewhere in your steps. Your physical mechanism must include at least one simple machine (other than an inclined plane).
  • Collaboration This is the first of at least two group projects in BB&A. You will need to work with your team-mates and coordinate with the teams before and after you in sequence.
  • Testing and iteration You are required to test your mechanism and go through at least one cycle of iterative development.

Deliverables

The Rube Goldberg machine should be set up and ready to go at the start of class. You will have 10 minutes to make any final adjustments. It’s OK if your project doesn’t quite work when we run the machine, but it should be well-designed and work consistently during testing.

As a group, submit the following to one person’s Miro board:

  • 4 – 6 pictures of the actual working process (brainstorming, designs, prototyping, etc.) and the final prototype. Include a caption or description of each picture along with supporting text to help us understand your design process and final prototype.
  • A brief (1-2 paragraphs) narrative describing your testing and iteration. How did you test your mechanism? What was your goal in iteration? (Reliability? Elegance?) How did you decide what to change?
  • 1 video of your station at work.

Suggested Steps

  • You have been assigned to a group for this project. Check in with your group-mates right away and plan how you want to work. It’s a good idea to talk about communication styles, when you want to be in the lab together, and maybe put some milestones on the calendar. Also make contact with the groups before and after you; you will need to agree on how your components come together. A few thoughts on groupwork:
    • Be careful with ideas–we all get possessive of our own. Practice letting go.
    • When somebody stops contributing in meetings, or checks out of a group, there is always a reason. Probably they are not feeling safe, respected and heard. You can avoid more serious problems by proactively checking in with your groupmate.
    • If you experience tension or conflict in your group and feel you need the support of a member of the teaching team, please reach out. We are happy to talk through your situation confidentially. Please keep in mind, however, that any intervention (such as a group meeting mediated by a member of the teaching team) is going to require you to tell your teammate why you are frustrated.
    • We generally do not assign different grades to different members of a group, but this is a possibility in extraordinary circumstances.
  • As soon as possible, decide how your component will interact with those coming before and after. Set a time to test them together.
  • You can use basically anything in the lab that can be modified with the techniques you have learned. There are boxes with a lot of random stuff, we have enough cardboard, wood and other materials, we have tubes in the back, etc. If you need anything special, please let us know asap.
  • Iterate! It is worth exploring several different solutions to a problem rather than obsessing too much over getting a particular mechanism working. The cheaper the prototype, the quicker you can develop your design. This is where sketches and cardboard models are really valuable.
  • We will assemble the final machine on the tables where we meet in the iDesign space. Ensure that your Rube Goldberg station can be transported from the lab (or wherever you assemble it) to iDesign!
